GrandMom We Do Not See This in Las Vegas? Parkesburg Borough Wide Yard Sale

PARKESBURG BOROUGH YARD SALE
This was too cute. Parkesburg had their fall borough wide yard sale this past Saturday, the last weekend of Sept. My grandaughter who was up visiting us for two weeks from Las Vegas was amazed at the horse and buggy who pulled up in front of us. Yes, she has seen horses and buggies before riding through Lancaster County with us when she visits, but she just turned 4 and I am not sure what she remembers on her visits. However, I know she is not seeing horse and buggies in Las Vegas, she was amazed. I drug her out of bed on a nice fall day as I knew I had to get to this giant yardsale. I was ready to go, she was so tired, I wrapped her in her blanket, put her in her car seat and off we went, I knew she would have fun and my Mother lives in Parkesburg so we were heading there, I knew I could make her breakfast and have another cup of coffee. By the time we were at the first yard sale, she was ready to go, I have her hooked now, we hit 10 yard sales by the time we made Parkesburg. We stopped at many in Coatesville and Valley Township. I took her to my Mothers in Parkesburg where I had coffee and she had oatmeal, that’s when this beautiful horse pulled up! Great Day!! Many great finds. What a perfect day to spend with my grandaughter!

Annual Amphibious Order of Frogs Dinner at St. Anthony’s Lodge in Downingtown Chester County

Johnsontown Downingtown Annual Frogleg Feast Chester County
The Amphibious Order of the Frogs is an event the Lodge still has today. This frog party is a celebration to bring together men from all over and from different walks of life to renew old friendships and fellowship. In 1934 to around 1940 these frogs were caught along the banks of the east branch Branywine river in the months of June and July. After WW2, in 1947, the frogs were bought in Louisiana, Australia, Japan, India and many other places.
Do the math: Ten women work four days to prepare a meal that 1,000 men eat in three hours. What does that equal? Tradition. Tonight is the 75th annual Amphibious Order of Frogs dinner at St. Anthony’s Lodge in Downingtown’s old Italian neighborhood. Tickets, which are long sold-out, cost $35 for unlimited Miller Lite and reminiscing, a feast of veal spezzato, roasted chicken, hot peppers, and salad, then the traditional fried legs of ranocchio. “Are frog legs Italian?” I asked Laurie Mascherino Reutter, who is 90 and has been preparing or serving this giant family-style meal once a year for a half-century. “No,” she said, accenting her point with a jab of her paring knife, “frog legs are poor. We were poor.” The dinner’s roots reach back to the Great Depression. In the early 1930s a group of local teenagers with such nicknames as “Barrel House” Sciaretta, “Skid” Di Berardinis, and “Kite” Di Sante used to catch frogs in the nearby Brandywine Creek. They’d shoot their prey with a .22, then cook them over a fire. “We’d even eat blackbirds if we could catch them,” said Reutter, a 4-foot-6 hot shot with snow-white hair.
Johnsontown brings back many memories for me. When my great grandparents came over from Italy, My great grandfather worked for the railroad and purchased 7 acres in Thorndale, my grandmother who was 7 at the time she arrived in the US, settled our family on Viaduct Ave in Johnsontown when she married later on, and that’s where I was born, and most of my family remained in Johnsontown for many years. I remember going to St. Anthonys swim club every summer, so young, so much fun, so many memories.
